Image of the Month, April 2012

Posted by: Will Wootton 12 years ago

Part-finished portrait of a late Roman magistrate from Aphrodisias. While the figure's toga and neck have been largely finished, probably with abrasives, his face has been worked the flat chisel but not finished. His hair, meanwhile, and ears have been only very roughly worked with a roundel. This statue was found in the Sculptor's Workshop at Aphrodisias and probably represents a commission which fell through.
