Place: Tivoli

Tivoli (ancient Tibur) is a small town 30 km north-east of Rome. In the Roman period it was famous as a source of travertine, which was known to the Romans as lapis tiburtinus. This was an important building stone in ancient Rome but continued to be used in the Renaissance and the modern period. Also close to Tivoli is the palatial villa of the emperor Hadrian.
