Place: Sardis

Sardis was a large and wealthy ancient city in the Hermos valley of western Turkey. Capital of the kingdom of Lydia, the city later became an important Persian administration centre until its conquest by Alexander. In the Roman period Sardis prospered once more and was adorned with several major building complexes, among them the large bath-gymnasium, which has been heavily restored.
