Bands of flat chiselling can be seen below the capital and in the curved moulding following the line of the arcaded niche to the right.

Notes

The fact that the capital in this detail, like the other capitals and figures on the chest of this sarcophagus, have been left rough while the architectural framework around them has been finished indicates either a division of labour between specialists or a highly methodical working practice on the part of a single carver.
