Evidence for working practices

1. Block joint

Process
Placement
Description
The block division passes through the front of the central figure's head is another example that demonstrates that carving was accomplished in place.

2. - Toolmarks

Process
Fine shaping
Tool
Flat Chisel
Method
Angle: Shallow (40-50°)
Force: Gentle
Description
The flat chisel was used to carefully model the detailing on the headwear of the lefthand priest.

2. - Toolmarks

Process
Fine shaping
Tool
Roundel
Method
Angle: Shallow (40-50°)
Force: Gentle
Description
Marks of a slightly round-headed chisel can be seen in the hair of these figures. The carver appears to have been alternating between flat and rounded chisel during the finishing of these figures.

3. Pin socket

Process
Restoration
Description
The noses of the two figures on the right of this image had their noses restored at some point prior to the late twentieth-century; the pin holes for attaching these noses can be seen here. Some of these noses were put back on after cleaning. It is noticeable that the broken edges of the noses had been squared off in order to make a cleaner restoration.
