The three levels of roughing-out can be seen clearly in this close-up image but it is also evident that the guideline strip was shaped in two phases. A first phase of definition, revealed by the slightly raised borders within this strip, was follow by the smoothing of the surface along the middle of this strip. This final level of work defined the forms that the carvers responsible for the rest of the carving were supposed to reference.
