Evidence for working practices

1. Block joint

Process
Placement
Description
A joint between blocks passes through the middle of this scene and the carving crosses it without interruption, showing that it was carved in place.

Notes

The difference in scale between figures and architectural details can be clearly seen here. Buildings are used to give an impression of the setting rather than an accurate impression of a specific location. Also visible in this detail is the curious arrangement of the spiral border on this section of the Column. At the top the spiral border follows the joint between drums before jumping up over a cluster of figures, suggesting again that its placing responded to the arrangement of the scene beneath it.
