The skin of the face is polished with abrasives, but this might be later post-antique work.

Notes

This style of portrait is conventionally dated to the Flavian or early Trajanic period, when hairstyles of this sort were in fashion. However, there is evidence for Roman portraits being re-carved later, especially in the Baroque period, and it is possible that some of the more elaborate hairstyles found on these portraits were later additions.
