Evidence for working practices

Process
Squaring
Tool

Method
Angle: Steep (60-70°)
Force: Hard
Description
The rear side of this sarcophagus is less fully carved than the other sides. Most of the rear surface has only been roughly squared with the point chisel, clearly the first stage of work that the whole chest would have gone through.

2. Toolmarks

Process
Roughing-out
Tool
Point
Method
Angle: Vertical (90°)
Force: Medium
Description
Following squaring the upper edge of this rear side was roughed-out with a lip for a lid to be place on top, the lower socle was shaped and the bottom portion of this side carved back to the background.

Roughing-out
Tool

Method
Angle: Vertical (90°)
Force: Medium
Description
From the end of this chest it is clear that the next stage of work was the roughing-out of the garland form, a stage of work never undertaken on the rear for some reason.

Notes

What the rear side of this sarcophagus shows is that the roughing-out process was sometimes divided into three stages: initial rough squaring, roughing-out of the top and bottom sections of each side, and then roughing-out of the garland scheme. All of these stages of work could have been undertaken in the quarry - and there are examples taken to this stage in quarries elsewhere - but the amount of part-finished examples from Aphrodisias indicates that at least the final stages of roughing-out were carried out in the city.
